A Brighter Shade of Gray

Jon Gray gets the start for the Rockies against the Padres Wednesday.

Gray is coming off an 8-2 loss to the Diamondbacks in the season opener last Thursday. Gray gave up three runs before he retired a batter and departed after the D-Backs loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth.

The odds would seem to be with Gray against the Padres.

He never lost back-to-back decisions last season, and the Rockies suffered losses in back-to-back Gray starts only once last year -- July 25 at St. Louis and July 30 at Washington. Gray had a no-decision against the Cardinals, allowing two runs in five innings. He suffered the loss to the Nationals, allowing three runs in seven innings.

Gray has had success against the Padres, although he has been more dominant against them at Coors Field than he has been at Petco Park. He is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in five starts at Coors Field, and 2-2 with a 3.21 ERA at Petco Park.

It has been more about the support Gray has received in San Diego than the way he has pitched against the Padres. His career 3.21 ERA at Petco Park is his third best as a visitor in an NL city.

A key for success for Gray is getting ahead in the count. Hitters have a .179 average against him after he gets ahead 0-2, and .224 if the count is 1-1. After Gray falls behind 2-0, however, the opposition has hit .318 against him.
