Thursday 4x4: Arenado At Home in the West

Nolan Arenado has established himself as the most impactful hitter within the NL West.

The numbers tell the story. His 65 RBI against the Giants since the start of the 2015 season are 10 more than any player has against a single team in that time span.

Among the 15 highest RBI totals against a single team since 2005, Arenado fills four of the slots -- against the four NL West teams. The only other players with more than one slot among the 15 are Albert Pujols against the Rangers and the A's; Anthony Rizzo against the Reds and the Pirates, and Paul Goldschmidt against the Dodgers and Rockies.

Buster Posey took a foul tip off the side of his helmet on Tuesday, and manager Bruce Bochy gave Posey the day off Wednesday. All things, however, point to Posey being in the lineup for Thursday's series against the Rockies. And why not? Posey has a career .351 average against the Rockies, the second highest career average against Colorado of any player with at least 400 plate apperance, and just one point behind the leader, Craig Biggio.

DJ LeMahieu, whose .339 career average against the Giants is the highest of any Rockies player in history with a minimum 150 plate appearances, is on the disabled list this weekend. The Rockies, however, have two other players who rank among the top 10 and they are ready to play -- Chris Iannetta, whose .338 average is second, and Nolan Arenado, whose average is fifth.

The Rockies NL West action so far has been dominated by the Padres. Other than a season-opening, three-game series at Arizona, the Rockies have not played another NL West team except the Padres. And they have played three series -- a total of 10 games -- against the Padres.

That's about to change. Beginning Thursday night, the Rockies are scheduled to play 16 of their next 22 games against the NL West -- seven against the Giants, six against the Dodgers, and three against the Diamondbacks.
