Saturday 4x4: Freeland is Rolling

Kyle Freeland has become the main man in the Rockies rotation. He is 4-1  with a 1.59 ERA in his last five starts, and all five of them have been quality starts -- six or more innings and allowee three earned runs or fewer. It's been a big turnaround for Freeland, who was 0-3 in his first four starts of the season. It has put the Denver native at the top of the Rockies rotation.

Charlie Blackmon is only hitting .265 -- not where he expects to be. He, however, is still a threat when there is a chance to pick up an RBI. David Dahl is hitting .500 with runners in scoring position, but that's with only eight at-bats. Among the Rockies regulars, Blackmon is the leader with a .368 average.

Wade Davis' job is to save games. And he has been doing that. Davis has in 16 in 18 opportunities, the most of any reliever in the National League.

Rockies manager Bud Black sees the value of analytics, but he also sees the value in watching his pitchers and making decisions based off how they are impacting the game, as much, if not more, than a generic study.

The Rockies have three of the top 16 pitchers in the National League in terms of innings pitched. Chad Bettis is sixth with 55 innings, Kyle Freeland eighth with 54, and Jon Gray went into Saturday's start tied for 15th with 53 innings.
