Goldschmidt Breaking Out at Coors Field

In what has been a season of struggle for Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, Coors Field has provided an inviting surrounding. Goldschmidt showed signs of breaking out of the season-long struggle in a three-game visit to San Francisco to open the week, going 8-for-12 against the Giants.

And then came a visit to Coors Field, where in helping the Diamondbacks to wins on Friday and Saturday, he went 6-for-9 with four home runs -- two in each game.

What could be a costly mistake, Rockies reliever Brad Pounders hit Goldschmidt with a pitch in the ninth inning on Saturday. Goldschmidt was professional about it.

"It's part of the game," he said.

But more than a few eyebrows were raised, in both clubhouses. It's one thing to protect teammates, but there was nothing to defend. Starting pitcher Chad Bettis hung two breaking pitches and Goldschmidt unloaded.,

Pounders said he was trying to pitch inside, but the fact the pitch caught Goldschmidt in the ribs created the belief of an intentional effort.

Goldschmidt has 14 career home runs at Coors Field, which puts him No. 18 on the all-time visitors list. It's the second biggest total for him in a road park, two behind Dodger Stadium.
