1-2-3: LeMahieu Late Scratch; Howard Recalled; Musgrave on Disabled List

After juggling the roster to call up Jon Gray from Triple-A Albuquerque, and calling up left-handed pitcher Sam Howard to provide bullpen protection, the Rockies made an unexpected move less than an our before Saturday's game with the Mariners -- second baseman DJ LeMahieu was scratched from the lineup with lower back soreness.

LeMahieu made three diving, sliding defensive players in the early innings in Friday's victory against the Mariners, but there was no word concerning a possible cause of the injury. Pat Valaika replaced LeMahieu in the lineup.

LeMahieu has been on the disabled list twice this season, but neither time was the back a part of the problem. He missed 10 games from April 28-May 7 with a strained right hamstring, and 17 games from May 14-May 30 wit a left thumb sprain.

To make room for Howard on the roster, the Rockies placed Harrison Musgrave on the 10-day disabled list that day after he was credited with his first big-league victory in the win over the Mariners. Musgrave suffered a right hip flexor strain

Jeff Hoffman, who was called up to start Friday, was optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque to open a roster spot for Gray, who had been sent to Albuquerque on June 30, and made two starts during his time with the Isotopes. He was 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in Albuquerque, but 7-7 with a 5.77 ERA in 17 starts with the Rockies before being optioned to Albuquerque.

Howard had a brief call up earlier this season, and made his big-league debut iwth a one-inning appearance against the Diamondbacks on June 9.
