Freeland Sets the Pace at Home, Where Rockies Are Cooking, Again

Rockies lefthander Kyle Freeland says he doesn't think pitching at Coors Field is a big deal.

"I look at it as just another start," he said.

Yeah, like a Rolls Royce is just another car.

But then maybe it has something to do with being born and raised in Denver, having learned to pitch at altitude. Oh, and not looking for excuses for failure.

Not that Freeland has had much in the way of failure at Coors Field, where a year ago he came within two outs of no-hitting the White Sox on the Sunday afternoon before the All-Star Break.

Freeland turned in another seven shutout innings at Coors Field in a 2-0 victory against the Pirates on Monday night. He lowered his season ERA at Coors Field to 2.18, the lowest for any pitcher with a minimum five starts. Not only that, he is one of only two pitchers to have a sub-3.00 ERA at Coors Field, and of 11 seasons in which a pitcher has had an ERA below 4.00 at Coors Field, Freeland has accounted for two of them in only two big-league seasons.

"To me it's another fifth day for me," said Freeland, referring to being part of a five-man rotation. "I enjoy pitching here. I like it here, with the crowd and the team plays well here."

Freeland allowed only two hits in seven shutout innings en route to his team-high seventh quality start in 10 starts at home this season. It was the fourth time in those seven games that he held the opposition scoreless. Tyler Anderson is second on the team with six and Jon Gray has five.

And the key is. ...

"Not letting the Coors Field effect come into play," he said. "I pitch my game. My game is pitching to contract and getting week contact. I've been able to do that."

With Freeland setting the tone for success, the Rockies have regained their home-field edge since July 1. They struggled in the first three months of the season at home, compiling the second worst home-field record in the National League. Since July 1, however, they have the best hom-field record. And now they rank sixth in the NL in their home-field winning percentage.
