Rockies Face Rough Road In Run to Post-Season
The Rockies are in the midst of the battle for a post-season invitation.
But there are obstacles they will have to overcome.
Let's take a look at what remains for the Rockies, Dodgers, D-backs and Braves.
Why those four? If the season ended today, the Braves would be the second NL wild-card.The D-Backs would be the NL West champion, and the Dodgers and Rockies are chasing the Braves for a wild-card spot, and the D-Backs for the NL West title.
NL Wild-Card & NL West Standings
So what's the challenge ahead?
It starts with the number of head-to-head games remaining. The Braves have four-game series with both the Rockies, at home, and D-backs, on the road. The Rockies and D-backs, however, still have home-and-home series, which means they can do damage to one another while the Braves watch from afar. And the Dodgers not only have a home-and-away with the D-backs, but have seven games remaining at Coors Field and three with the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

The Rockies do have 27 of their remaining games at home, they have regained their home-field edge at Coors Field. They went into Wednesday 17-5 at Coors Field since June 19, the best home-field record in the NL in that stretch. The D-backs, meanwhile, are 8-13 at home since June 19, and the Braves are 7-10. And the Rockies will play 21 of their final 33 games at home.
What's Left: Rockies
The D-backs, meanwhile, play 26 of thier remaining 48 games on the road, and that includes a nine-game road trip that opens on Friday with games in Cincinnati, Arlington, Tx., and San Diego. Those are three games who are a combined 54 games below .500, but they will be at home, and the D-Backs will be making a trip that requires stops in three time zones, and the first two series -- Cincinnati and Texas -- will have excessive heat without a roof to allow for the stadiums to be air conditioned.
What's Left: D-Backs
The Braves do have 30 remaining games at home, but there are a couple of traps. They have 37 of their final 51 games against teams with winning record, inlcuding a makeup game against the Cubs, and series with division-leading Philadelphia, Boston, and the Dodgers. They also have one of those coast-to-coast road trip in September, taking them to Arizona and San Francisco.
They also play seven of their final 10 games against the Phillies.
What's Left: Braves
The Dodgers have 25 of the 47 games on the road, and seven of those road games are at Coors Field, beginning with a four-game visit this weekend. They have one three-city trip remaining, but it's a blessing in terms of going to the Midwest to play the Reds and Cardinals in mid-September, when the weather is cooler. They open that trip with three games at Coors Field. they do have two one-city trips remaining -- two games in Texas and three games in Seattle.
