Wade Davis Calls It a Career After 13 Big League Seasons

Former Rockies closer Wade Davis made his retirement official on Wednesday.

Daivs, who spent three seasons (2018-20) with the Rockies, was a three-time All-Star during his 13-year career which included time with Tampa Bay (2009-2012), Kansas City (2013-16, 2021), the Chicago Cubs (2017), and Rockies (2018-19).

Davis converted 60 of 124 save opportunities with the Rockies, including 43 of 49 in 2018. He, however, slipped in 2019, and had only one save opportunity — which he failed to convert — after July 25. He finished that season with a 5.51 ERA, and while he returned in 2020, Davis made only five appearances, covering 4 1/3 innings in which he allowed three home runs and 10 earned runs.

He finished his career in 2021 pitching for the Royals, the team he spent four years with, twice making an All-Star team. The good bye tour, however, was more a struggle than a celebration. He was 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in 40 games, converting two of three save opportunities.

He appeared in All-Star games in 2015-17, during which time he converted of 81 saves — 44 of 48 opportunities with the Royals in 2015-16, and 32 of 33 opportunities with the Cubs in 2017.
