Blast Off: Cowboys FB Signs Son of Rocket Ismail

Rocket Ismail ii decided to stay close to home when he came out of high school in Carrollton, Tx. The son of former Heisman Trophy winner Rahib “Rocket” Ismail was offered by Nevada, but decided to walk-on at TCU.

Looking for playing time, however, he eventually transferred to Cisco College, and now he is headed to Wyoming, the only junior college transfer among the 22 commitments the Cowboys have received this off-season.

Ismail announced his commitment on Monday. He is a wide receiver/kick returner who played in seven games at Cisco College last fall and led the team with 48 receptions, ranking second with 434 receiving yards. He also had a 3.0 grade point average.

He certainly has a strong pedigree.

His father was a Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame, who stunned the football world when in advance of the NFL draft he opted for the CFL, signing a four-year, $18.5 million contract with the Toronto Argonauts.

The MVP of the 1991 Gray Cup, Ismail was let out of his CFL contract following the 1992 season and embarked on an NFL career in which he played for the Raiders, Panthers and Cowboys, twice registering 1,000 yard receiving seasons.

Ismail’s uncle, Qadry “Missile” Ismail, played collegiately at Syracuse, and spent 10 years in the NFL as a receiver. Another uncle,  Sulamin “The Bomb” Ismail, attended UTEP and played for the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League.
