Lawrence Betrayed by Defense; Suffers Loss in AFL Fall Stars Game

Reliever Justin Lawrence was one out away from pitching his way out of a two-base fielding error committed by Andres Gimenez, and suffered both a blown save and the loss in the East Team’s 7-6 loss to the West Team in the Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game.

Lawrence, the only Rockies prospect in the game, got the call to protect a 6-5 lead in the ninth. Vlad Guerrero, Jr., the first batter he faced, grounded to short, but Gimenez booted the ball and threw wild, allowing Guerrero to reach second.

Lawrence registered the first out when Davan Biggio lined to left, and then got Ryan McKenna to pop up in foul territory to first. Buddy Reed, however, followed with a game-tying triple, and scored the game-winning run on an ensuing single by Melbrys Viloria.
