Counting Down Rockies Top Prospects: No. 29 Fuentes
Josh Fuentes, 3B
Born: 2/19/1993. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 215. Drafted: Missouri Baptist, 2014 (undrafted). Signed by: Marc Gustafson.
Best known as the cousin of Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, Fuentes was undrafted despite hitting .365 his junior year at Missouri Baptist.
He started to create his own legacy at Double-A Hartford in 2017, putting together a dominating final seven weeks to the season to finish tied for second in the league with a .307 average and third in the Eastern League with a .517 slugging percentage and .869 OPS.
Fuentes followed that up by playing for Culiacan in the Mexican Winter League, where he was getting time at first base in addition to third. He won Eastern League Player of the Week awards twice in the three week period from July 17-Aug. 6, and was the Eastern League Player of the Month in August when he hit .487.
He has the arm strength to play third base and decent range. Fuentes can get long with his swing, but maintained a compact approach during his breakout August. Now comes the challenge of maintaining the approach into the 2018 season.
