Counting Down Rockies Top Prospects: No. 26 Daza
26. Yonathan Daza, OF
Born: 2/28/1994. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 190. Drafted: Venezuela, 2010. Signed by: Rolando Fernandez/Carlos Gomez/Orlando Medina.
Daza signed as a 16-year-old and spent his first three seasons at the Rockies Dominican academy. He came to the states in 2014 and has made an impression. He has hit a combined .328 in the four years, including winning the Cal League batting title with a .341 average at Lancaster in 2017. He also was third with 87 RBI, second with 11 triples and fifth in the league (and on his team) with 31 stolen bases. He has been a regular at all three outfield positions since signing, and was in center field at Lancaster, which is a position he will need to play at the big-league level in light of an offensive game built around speed, not power. He has the speed to run down the ball in center field and a decent arm. His speed is an asset offensively, too. He uses the middle of the field, and has the alley power to pick up doubles and triples. The Rockies were impressed enough that they used one of their Arizona Fall League spots for Daza in 2017.
