Counting Down Rockies Prospects: No. 25 Montano

25. Daniel Montano, OF

Born: 3/31/1999. B-T: L-R.. HT: 6-1. Wt.: 170. Signed: Venezuela, 2015. Signed by: Rolando Fernandez/Carlos Gomez/Orlando Medina.

Montano had a break out world Youth Championship experience in 2014, and landed a $2 million signing bonus, the largest the Rockies have given a Latin player. He spent the last two years playing in the Dominican Summer League, primarily because the Rockies do not have a team in the Arizona Summer League. He will come to the mainland in 2018, most likely debuting at rookie-level Grand Junction. He has shown skills beyond his age. He has a compact and easy approach at the plate, showing good pitch recognition and strike zone discipline. He currently has gap power now but as he fills out and gets stronger he projects to have a legitimate power bat. He has played center field (2016) and right field (2017) in his two years in the Dominican, but most likely will wind up in left field. He tracks the ball well and gets a god break, but as his physically matures he could lose a step or two, and he has slightly below average arm strength.
