Counting Down Top 30: No. 9 Ryan Vilade

9 Ryan Vilade, SS

Tool Grades: Batting 50, Power 60, Run 45, Arm 60, Field 50, Overall 55

Born: 2/18/1999. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 194. Drafted: HS-Stillwater, Okla., 2017 (2nd round). Signed by: Jesse Retzlaf.

Track Record: Vilade didn’t get as much hype as some of his teammates on the 2016 Pan Am team that won the gold medal at the Championships, but he did get scouts attention when he won the Home Run Derby at the Under Armor All-America Games at Wrigley Field in 2016. The Gatorade Oklahoma player of the year in 2017, Vilade turned down an offer to Oklahoma State to sign with the Rockies after being selected 48th overall. He was the highest drafted Oklahoma high school since the Cardinals selected Pete Kozma in the first round in 2007.

Scouting Report: The naysayers question whether Vilade as that quick-twitch athleticism to play shortstop, but the believers point to his strong arm, soft hands and advanced instincts. He has bat quickness and can drive the ball, which bodes well for him to have impact power as he gets stronger. It’s evident he grew up around the game with the way he approaches the challenges, and adjusts to struggles.

The Future: The Rockies are going to give Vilade a chance to play shortstop, but he will also get time at third base and first base, a part of their organizational effort to create options for prospects so they can take advantage of roster openings when the prospect is ready. .
