Counting Down Top 30: No. 7 Yency Almonte
7 Yency Almonte, rhp
Tool Grades: Fastball: 60, Slider 55, Changeup 55, Control 50, Overall 55
Born: 6/4/1994. B-T: S-R. Ht.:6-3x. Wt.: 205. Drafted: HS-Miami, 2012 (17th round). Signed by: Ralph Reyes (Angels).
Track Record: Six years since being drafted and with his third organization, Almonte’s potential is becoming reality. The Angels thought enough him as a 17th round draft choice that they gave him a $250,000 signing bonus, but they dealt him to the White Sox, and then, after four years in the minors and still at the Single-A level, the Rockies picked him up in exchange for Tommy Kahnle, who they were planning to release until. Almonte’s potential has become reality in two years in the Rockies organization. He earned in-season promotions each of the two years, and finished last year at Triple-A Albuquerque.
Scouting Report: the lanky right-hander has actually gained 25 pounds since turning pro, and it is evident in a fastball that topped out at 92 miles per hour in high school and now sits between 93-96, touching on 98 with hard sink. He is above average with both a hard slider and a changeup that is still developing into an out pitch. .
The Future: Almonte is close to the big leagues. He finished up last year at Triple-A Colorado Springs, making seven starts and a relief appearance. He has middle of the rotation expectations and as he sharpens the changeup could turn into an even bigger impact starter. If the need arises, though, he has late-inning type potential with a fastball that is even stronger in short stints.
