Counting Down Top 30: No. 5 Peter Lambert

5 Peter Lambert, rhp

Tool Grades: Fastball: 55; Curveball 55, Changeup 60. Overall 55.

Born: 5/28/1997. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 185. Drafted: HS-San Dimas, CA 2015 (2nd round). Signed by: John Lukens.

Track Record: The Rockies took advantage of their blessings in the draft in 2015, and were able to land Lambert with their fourth selection, but only the 44th overall. Nobody could argue with his success in high school but he didn’t overpower and there were questions of his thin frame. What the Rockies saw was a pitcher with a live arm who could add muscle and grow into his body. And they liked his attitude..

Scouting Report: Lambert has shown the competiveness the Rockies anticipated, pitching in three of the most hitter-friendly parks in the minor leagues his first three seasons, and hasn’t been phased. He has begun to fill out, and the fastball is now constantly 91 to 93 miles per hour, touching on 96. He has excellent command with some sink. The curveball the Rockies are now stressing has the makings of being Lambert’s best pitch. He has a changeup that he likes to use, keeping hitters off balance.

The Future: He has that smooth delivery that does not put strain on the shoulder. His high three-quarter arm slot allows him to keep the ball down, a critical factor at Coors Field. He projects as a solid No. 3 right now, but if he continues to strength his lower half the velocity will pick up and he could be even better..
