Counting Down Top 30: No. 2 Riley Pint
2 Riley Pint, RHP
Tool Grades: Fastball 75; Curveball 65, Slider 50, Changeup 60; Control: 45, Overall 65
Born: 11/06/1997. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 195. Drafted: HS-Overland Park, KS., 2016 (1st round). Signed by: Bret Baldwin.
Track Record: Pint was the fourth player taken overall in 2016, and received a $4.8 million signing bonus to pass on a scholarship to LSU. So dominating with a fastball that will legitimately hit 100 miles per hour he simply intimidated and overpowered high school hitters, which allowed him to develop some bad habits in terms of his pitching mechanics. The Rockies have taken a cautious development approach to him, moving slowly in refining the mechanics, which has limited his innings and led to him mixing simulated games into his schedule with minor league games. The efforts weren’t as bad as the numbers indicate, but his command issue limited how deep he could get into a game.
Scouting Report: The radar has caught his fastball as high as 102 miles per hour, but he will pitch in the 93-to-98 range. He has a power curveball that is a legitimate No. 2 pitch, but was put on the back burner the past summer to help him focus on his fastball/changeup combo. He is not wild, wild but will pull off pitches and miss the zone. He has the athleticism that should allow him to come quick once he gets comfortable with the adjustments..
The Future: Pint has the raw stuff to be a power pitcher at the top of the rotation. That strikeout ability created by his fastball/curveball/changeup assortment will be a key once he masters the strikezone to force hitters to be more aggressive.
