Counting Down Rockies Top 30: No. 16 Dom Nunez
16. Dom Nunez, C
Born: 1/17/1995. B-T: L-R. Ht.: 6-1. Wt.: 202. Drafted: HS-Elk Grove, Ca. 2013 (6th round). Signed by: Gary Wilson.
Nunez was a shortstop in high school on a team that also saw future first-round draft picks Dylan Carlson and Derek Hill, along with first baseman J.D. Davis, who debuted with the Astros in August, and Rowdy Telez, a 2013 draft choice of the Blue Jays. Nunez was a member of the 2012 USA Baseball 18-under National Team that won the IBAF Junior championship in Seoul, South Korea. He turned down a scholarship to UCLA after the Rockies selected him in the sixth round of the 2013 draft and gave him an over-slot $800,000 bonus. Nunez played shortstop in rookie ball in 2013 but returned to Grand Junction in 2014 and began the conversion to becoming a catcher. He has adapted to catching quickly. He has soft hands and quick feet, and controls the game behind the plate. He has a potential impact bat, and a swing that has been compared to Carlos Gonzalez, but he is still making offensive adjustments to pro ball. The ball away remains an issue that as he moves up each level becomes more of an issue.
