Rockies Conclude Draft; Ink Never-Give-Up Stovall -- Updated Signing List included

Second baseman Hunter Stovall, the Rockies 21st round selection in last month's first-year player draft, is an undersized middle infielder, listed at 5-foot-7 and 165 pounds. He has molded his career after Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

The Rockies would be thrilled if Stovall can live up to the standards Pedroia  has set.

The Rockies agreed to terms this week with Stovall, the last of the 33 players from the first-year player draft that they signed. The Rockies made overtures to several of the final eight -- but they all were committed to attending college.

The deadline for signings is Friday. Stovall is expected to join the Rockies Rookie-level team in Grand Junction. The next step is up to him.

Pedroia made his climb to the big leagues fairly quickly. Three years after the Red Sox signed him as a second-round pick out of Arizona State, Pedroia was 2007 AL Rookie of the Year. The next year, he was the 2008 AL MVP. Pedroia has been a four-time AL All-Star, a four-time Gold Glove selection for defense, and won the 2008 AL Silver Slugger Award as the best offensive second baseman.

“His history is kind of similar to mine,” Stovall said. “He proved everyone wrong.”

Stovall's challenges were much deeper than his smallish stature. He was born five weeks premature and had to be resusitated at birth. Stovall was 11 before his parents told him about his birth, but since then it has served him well in his determination to move forward.

“The way I started my life has been a motivational tool for me,” Stovall told the Omaha World-Herald during the College World Series. “I just never, ever want to give up.”

That was evident in the early spring. Mississippi State coach Andy Cannizaro, in his second year, resigned amid a scandal. The Bulldogs were 0-3 at that time.

“It was definitely a blow to the program,” Stovall said. “But I knew we had a talented team and that actually helped us come together.”

The Bulldogs still stumbled, and after being shutout by LSU, leaving Mississippi State with a 14-15 record, Stovall sent a message out on twitter.

“It takes heart, determination, a never-give-up attitude and the willingness to put it all on the line to be a winner! I’m gonna fight to the end, no matter what. Are you? #HailStateBB #NeverGiveUp”

The Bulldogs regrouped and found themselves in the College World Series. They were eliminated by eventual national champion Oregon State in a game that decided the opponent for Arkansas in the best-of-three championship showdown.
