Cowboys Football Commit Earns Chicago Athlete of Year Honors

Camron Donatlan faced a whole new landscape when he arrived in Laramie, Wyo., earlier this month.

“I was the big-city kid,” said Donatlan, a three-sport star at West Aurora who will pursue football and track at Wyoming. “Coming to this town was really different.”

But as he proved during his four years with the Blackhawks, Donatlan is nothing if not adaptable.

“I like seeing the mountains,” he said. “I’m adjusting well. My teammates are cool. ... They’ll take me hiking; I’ve never been hiking.”

Donatlan also had his share of new experiences at West Aurora, where he arrived as a basketball prodigy and left as arguably the greatest all-around athlete in school history.

A four-year mainstay in basketball, the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder became a sought-after football prospect despite never playing a full varsity season and also won three state titles in track. For that range of accomplishments, Donatlan is the Tribune’s 2018 Athlete of the Year.
