Cowboys Challenged To Gain Tourney Bye

The Cowboys have put themselves in a must-win situation to avoid the play-in round of the MWC Basketball Tournament. And it’s not going to be easy in the aftermath of Tuesday’s 115-110 loss to New Mexico at the Auditorium Arena.

Tied for fifth place – the final spot that earns a first-round bye – with San Diego State and UNLV – the Cowboys also are a game back of fourth place New Mexico but only a half game ahead of sixth place Utah State.

The Cowboys play at third place Fresno State on Saturday, having lose five of their last six games to the Bulldogs. Wyoming closes the season a week later at second-place Boise State. In between they host Air Force on Wednesday.

Air Force will have the added challenge of having played both Saturday, hosting Utah State in the regularly scheduled game, and then hosting Fresno State on Monday night to make up for the game postponed during the government shutdown.

As challenging as the Cowboys remaining schedule is, San Diego State and UNLV both have games remaining against first-place Nevada.

San Diego State is at San Jose State on Saturday, and then hosts Boise State Tuesday night and Nevada on March 3. UNLV is at New Mexico on Sunday, host Nevada on Wednesday and finishes the regular season March 3 at Utah State.
