Four Wyoming Golfers Claim Academic Honors
Four members of the Wyoming men's golf team were selected for The Golf Coaches Association of American's Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scolars for the 2017-18 season, the second most of any team in the country. Georgia State had five selections.
Arron Lickteig, John Murdock, Quintin Pope and Glenn Workman were the Cowboys selections.
Lickteig is a petroleum engineering major. Murdock and Pope are business management majors. Workman is a finance and economics major. Lickteig, Pope and Workman all completed their final year of competition as seniors in the 2017-18 season. Murdock was a junior.
To be selected, a student-athlete must: be a junior or senior academically; compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level; participate in 50 percent of his team’s competitive rounds; have a stroke average under 76.0 at the Division I level, under 78.0 at the Division II or NAIA level and under 79.0 at the Division III level; and achieve a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20. Recipients must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their university.
“To have four individuals achieve at this level academically is something we really take pride in as a program,” said Joe Jensen, University of Wyoming Director of Golf and Head Men’s Golf Coach. “It takes a lot of dedication by our young men to both compete at a high level on the golf course and at the same time achieve at a high level academically.
"I am very appreciative of all the effort that our academic counseling staff puts into assisting our student-athletes. With all the travel involved in our sport, I also am extremely thankful to the faculty who work with us to allow our players to take tests early or have tests proctored on the road. That allows us to compete at top tournaments around the country, while at the same time making sure our players are keeping up with their academic requirements."
Jensen said the achievement underscores the effort the older players on the golf team put in to providing leadership academically and athletically.
"I couldn’t be prouder of this outstanding accomplishment by Arron (Lickteig), John (Murdock), Glenn (Workman) and Quintin (Pope). For Arron, Glenn and Quintin, I wish them all the best in their futures now that they have graduated, and for John, I am thrilled that he has one more year remaining as a member of the Wyoming Golf program.”
