Visit to Aztecs Next Up for Cowboy Hoops
The Cowboys basketball team plays at San Diego State on Wednesday night needing a win to strength its bid for a top-five finish in the MWC regular season, which would allow it to have a bye in the first round of the MWC tournament. The Cowboys are currently 7-5 in conference play and in a three-team tie for third place along with UNLV and Fresno State.
Just a game back, however, at 7-6 are Fresno State and Utah State, and San Diego State is two games back of the three teams tied for third at 5-7, but the Aztecs have four of their final six games at home.
Wednesday game tips off at 9 p.m., MST. It will be televised on CBS Sports Network, and broadcast on the Cowboy Sports Network. Fans also can listen to the broadcast and follow live stats on GoWyo.com.
The Cowboys lead the all-time series 41-40, but are 11-25 in San Diego. The Cowboys did beat the Aztecs 82-69 in Laramie in the conference opener for both teams Dec. 27.
The Cowboys lead the MWC averaging 29.2 defensive rebounds per game, which ranks eighth in the NCAA Division I. San Diego State, meanwhile, is second in the MWC in scoring defense (69.0 percent) and in limiting opponents to 42.2 percent from the field.
While Hayden Dalton reached the 1,000-point mark on Saturday at UNLV to join current teammates Justin James and Alan Herndon in the 1,000-point club, Aztecs forward Malik Pope goes into the game against Wyoming 10 points shy of becoming the fourth member of the Aztecs to score 1,000 points in college – Trey Kell, Jeremy Hemsley and Devin Watson.
As well as the game at San Diego State, the Cowboys remaining schedule includes road games at Fresno and MWC leader Boise. They host San Jose State on Saturday, New Mexico Tuesday and Air Force on Feb. 28.
