Meet the Cowboys: Freshman Trace Young

LARAMIE, Wyo.  – This summer will feature the incoming Cowboy basketball players in a feature called "Meet the Cowboys". The fifth installment features freshman Trace Young, a native of Owensboro, Ky.
Young comes to Wyoming from Mt. Zion Prep in Baltimore, Md., where he played the 2017-18 season.  He is rated as a three-star recruit by ESPN, 247Sports and Rivals.  Young averaged 15 points, five rebounds and three assists per game this past season on one of the nation's top prep school teams in the country.  His Mt. Zion Warrior team defeated the top ranked team in the country, Brewster Academy, by a score of 72-68 on Nov. 19, 2017.  Young scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in that victory. Young was teammates with fellow freshman Tariq Johnson at Mt. Zion Prep.

Young played his high school basketball at North Hardin in Kentucky. Coming out of high school, Young had recruiting interest from DePaul, Kansas State, UMass, South Florida, Texas Tech and USC.  Coming out of Mt. Zion Prep he had recruiting interest from Georgia Tech, Maryland, Memphis, Texas Tech and Rutgers. What did you like about the University of Wyoming?
Young: I had a check list in what kind of university I wanted to go to. I really wanted to play out west, I looked for a specific style of play and looked for good coaches. Once I came on my, Wyoming definitely hit everything on the check list. Being a Kentucky kid did you know about Coach Edwards' playing days?
Young: Growing up in Kentucky, UK basketball is everywhere so I grew up as a fan. Of course I knew about him and his great teams and I knew quite a bit about him. What type of player are fans going to see on the floor this season?
Young: I play the game with a ton of passion and play an exciting brand of basketball. I like to dunk a lot and bring energy to the game. I do whatever I can to give my team an edge. What have you enjoyed about your time in Laramie so far?
Young: The people are tremendous. Everyone is so polite and comes up and introduces themselves. Everyone goes out of their way to get to know you. It is so genuine and you know that they care about this team and you personally. Outside of basketball what is your main hobby?
Young: I play a lot of videogames. I'm pretty simple. It is a great way to relax and let my body rest after a long day in the gym. What is your favorite video game?
Young: Any type of sports game. I love to build dynasties and win championships. I like to play progressive games I hate to start and stop after every match. What are you working on this summer?
Young: I have been really working on my body. I'm really trying to get bigger, faster and stronger. I want to come into the season making an impact.
