Down the Stretch: NL Still Looking to Decide NLC and NLW Champions

The Rockies clinched no worse than an NL wild-card slot on Friday night, marking the first time in what is their 26 years of competition, that they will make back-to-back post-season appearances. They, however, also continue to be in first-place in the NL West. With both the Rockies winning against the Nationals and the Dodgers winning at San Francisco on Friday night, the Rockies’ Magic Number to clinch the first division title in franchise history is now two.

The race continues in the NL Central, where the Cubs and Brewers both won on Friday night, which reduced the Cubs magic number to clinching the division title to two. Whichever team fails to win the division has, however, clinched no worse than the No. 1 wild-card slot.

The Cardinals remain on the fringe of the NL wild-card game, but a win by the Dodgers or loss by the Cardinals will eliminate them.

Meanwhile, the Yankees win and A’s loss on Friday night settled the post-season alignment in the AL. The Yankees will host the A’s in the AL wild-card.
