Numbers Game: Ryan and Johnson Had a Striking Resume, Even in Their 40s

On Thursday night, Adam Wainwright, at the age of 39 years, 233 days, struck out 10 Washngton National batters. Only twice, has an older Cardinal struck out 10 or more — and it was Chuck Finley twice, punching out 12 at the age of 39 years, 279 days, and 10 at the age of 39 years, 268 days. The only other Cardinal to reach double figures in strikeouts in a game after during 39 was Bob Gibson.

Impressed?

Well, try this on for size:

In his 40s, Nolan Ryan struck out 16 batters in a game three times, including a no-hitter against Toronto at the age of 44 years, 90 days on May 1, 1991 when he was with Texas. He also no-hit Oakland on June 11, 1990, at the age of 43 years, 131 days.

There have been 118 games in MLB history in which a pitcher 40 or over struck out `10 or more batters.

Ryan did it 53 of the 118 times, and Randy Johnson accounted for 23. All other pitchers struck out 10 or at the age of 40 or older 42 times, and none of them struck out more than 13 in a game.
