CSU Hoops Update: Herl Looking Elsewhere
Colorado State has yet to name a head coach for its men’s basketball program but the list of potential candidates is shrinking by the day.
Less than 24 hours after Sean Star of the Reporter Herald reported that San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon is no longer in the mix for the open position, multiple sources confirmed that athletic director Joe Parker has not interviewed interim head coach Jase Herl. The 30-year old from from Goodland, KS. has begun talking to other programs around the country, as Herl does not expect to be given an opportunity in Fort Collins.
On Thursday former Georgia head coach Mark Fox emerged as the front-runner for the head coaching vacancy, as first reported by insidetheseams.com. According to sources close to the situation, Fox may also be looking for an opportunity at a larger institution though.
Herl was named interim head coach on Feb. 10 after Larry Eustachy and Steve Barnes were both placed on administrative leave. After leading the team to a victory over San Jose State in his first game as head coach, Herl quickly became a popular figure in the community.
Between opening practices to the media, openly campaigning for student support on campus and his mild-mannered temperament, Herl proved to be nothing like his predecessors.
Players described Herl as a total “player’s coach” and praised him for keeping the locker room together, but it was evidently not enough for the young coach to receive an interview for the permanent position.
Former CSU hoopster Gian Clavell played under Herl at Northwest Technical College (Kansas), where Herl was head coach for three seasons. Under Herl’s guidance, the Mavericks won 56 games, sent five players to Division 1 institutions and had two more players go on to play professionally overseas.
“I believe he did a great job with everything that was going on,” Clavell said. “He is a hell of a coach and a great teacher. I hope he gets the job but if he doesn’t, I am sure he will be very successful.”
Parker, CSU’s A.D. originally aimed to hire a coach within 30 days when he announced the school had hired Fogler Consulting to assist in the process.
