Rams Tennis Comes Up Short Against Boise State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team lost to the Boise State Broncos, 4-2, at the CSU Tennis Complex on Sunday, leaving the Rams winless (0-3) in MWC play and 9-9 overall.

CSU won the opening doubles point, and held a 2-0 match lead before Boise State rallied to improve its MWC record to 3-0..

In the doubles, Rams sophomore Alyssa Grijalva and freshman Priscilla Palermo won at No. 1 by a score of 6-3. The duo is now 9-4 in doubles play this spring. Junior Emily Kolbow and sophomore Riley Reeves then won on court No. 2 to improve to 3-0.

“I think we train them up well in doubles and they are doing the right things,” CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. “I’m proud of what they’re doing in doubles and they’ve committed themselves to playing smart doubles.”

Grijalva backed up her solid doubles performance with a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles over Lilian Poling, 6-2, 6-2. Grijalva is now 12-3 this spring, playing all 15 matches at the No. 3 spot.

Boise State picked up the next four singles wins, including two that required tiebreakers. . Priscilla Palermo’s first set against Wilhelmina Palmer went the distance with Palmer winning 7-6 (5) on her way to a match win. The second set of Emma Corwin’s match versus Nancy Menjivar also went to a tiebreak, with Menjivar clinching the win for the Broncos with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory.

“I was proud of the fight today,” Camerota said. “There were several points that were right there, back-and-forth. We keep getting right there and we will find that match to get over the hump and get a ‘W’ soon."
