Cowgirl Swim Team Sitting 3rd After Day 1 in MWC Meet

SAN ANTONIO –  Cowgirls Karla Contreras and CeeJay Harris finished among the top four in the finals of the one-meter even on the opening day of the Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championship. The Cowgirls finished the opening day in third place in the meet with 161 point. San Diego State and Nevada were tied for the lead with 189 points apiece.

Contreras, a sophomore, placed fourth in the preliminaries before claiming second place in the finals, behind Sharae Zheng of Nevada, who won the event for the second year in a row. Haris, who was eighth in the prelims, finished fourth in the finals.

The Cowgirls placed fourth in the 200 medley relay, junior Isobel Ryan, freshman Hannah McLean-Leonard and seniors Maria Harutjunjan and Rachel McKivigan combining for  a season-best 1:39.42.

Wyoming’s 800 freestyle relay team of freshman Katelyn Blattner, Sophomore Talita Te Flan, McKivigan and senior Kelly Sheldon finished seventh with a time of 7:20..

UW leads fourth-place Boise State, the defending champion, by 26 points after day one. Thursday’s schedule features the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and three-meter diving.
