Fernandez, Royo Fight Off Six Match Points to Claim A Victory
LAS VEGAS – The Wyoming tennis team had an up and down second day at the 2018 ITA Mountain Regional Championships on Thursday in Las Vegas.
“It was good to see Ana (Fernandez) and Ana (Royo) fight off six match points and still found a way to win,” head coach Dean Clower said. “We didn’t play our best, but good teams find a way when they aren’t playing the best. Tessa (van Der Ploeg) and Elisa (Koonik) started off strong in singles today having wins over top teams in our region. We have a lot of things to work on tomorrow and it will be good to see what adjustments we make.”
In doubles play, seniors Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg lost 8-4 against Nelson and Ladhani of Denver, 8-4. Ana Fernandez and Ana Royo won 7-6 (7-5) in the back draw consolation.
Koonik won her opening match on the day, 7-5, 7-5, over Toni Nelson of Denver, but dropped a 6-2, 6-2 contest against Brianna Chrisholm of Utah in the round 32. Fellow senior Tessa van Der Ploeg beat Hada Chang of Denver, 6-3, 6-3, and unfortunately lost a tough three setter, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 match against Monican Malinen of Colorado. Freshmen Maria Oreshkina lost to Madison Tattini of Utah, 6-4, 6-4, as did Ida Krause falling to En Pei Huang of UNLV, 6-0, 6-1.
