PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — The Cowgirls doubles team of seniors Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg rebounded from an opening round close to close out their compeition in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Wednesday morning.

The pair earned a 8-6 win over Jackie Carr and Tatum Rice of Arkansas. Carr and Rice were seeded eighth in the tournament and 36th in the Oracle/ITA preseason rankings.

“It was great to go out with a win,” assistant coach Erica Medlin said. “The Arkansas team started off strong and we had a major comeback. We played aggressive and kept high energy throughout the match, which is the Cowgirl way.”

The Cowgirl tennis team will be back in action on Friday-Saturday at the Jon Messick Invite in Ft. Collins.

The duo of Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg dropped their opening match on Tuesday morning in the qualifying doubles draw by an 8-4 margin against Magda Adaloglou and Emma Antonaki of Mississippi State.

“It was a difficult first match against a solid Mississippi State team,” Medlin said. “We started off strong but got a little too tentative during the match. Tomorrow, we will need to come out more aggressive.”

Koonik and van der Ploeg qualified for the tournament after earning a spot in the Oracle/ITA 2018 preseason doubles rankings which were announced in early September. The pair enter the fall season tied for the 60th best doubles team in the country. They placed seventh in the ITA Mountain Regional Rankings in June.
