Cowgirls Place Fifth at Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb.  – Freshman Katelyn Mitchem was Wyoming’s top finisher for the second straight cross-country meet, placing 16th out of a filed of 100 with a time of 22:06.7 on the six=kilometer course in the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational, hosted by Nebraska and Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Cowgirls finished fifth out of 12 Division I teams with 138 points.

“We had a solid team performance today,” associate head coach Amanda Clower said after the race. “Katelyn had another great race leading our team as a freshman. Ashley (Bock) and Kacey (Doner) worked well throughout the race together, and it was great to have Emily (Person) back competing (Saturday).”

Juniors Ashley Bock (20th, 22:14.9) and Kacey (22nd, 22:17.7) joined Mitchem in the top 25. Senior Emily Person made her season debut and finished 32nd with a time of 22:43.6.

“I was very impressed to see our team push together in humid and hot conditions,” Clower said. “They got out and put themselves in good positions and continued to fight through to the end.”

Senior Kiah Leonard placed 48th with a time of 23:14.3 to round out UW’s scorers. Freshmen Addi Iken and Kaylee Bentley finished 63rd and 71st with times of 23:40.6 and 23:58.9, respectively. Senior Regan VanDePol recorded a time 24:11.1, while freshman Victoria Tenpenny finished in 25:50.2

“We have three good weeks of training ahead of us before our next competition, so we will take advantage of that time,” Clower said.

No. 12-ranked Michigan placed first with 20 points. The Cowgirls return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Roadrunner Invite in Denver, Col
