Cowgirls Sweep Northern Colorado in Volleyball Exhibition Match

GREELEY – Libero Madi Fields posted a double-double, and the Wyoming volleyball team opened its weekend of exhibition action with a 3-0 sweep of Northern Colorado at the Bank of Colorado Arena on Friday night.

“I think we saw what you might expect in a preseason exhibition match,” head coach Chad Callihan said. “We saw some flashes of some pretty good offense and saw some things defensively we want to get better at. Great way to get some experience on the road. I love doing this on the road and giving them a chance to compete in a different environment. Hopefully it prepares us well for down the road.”

Fields had 13 digs and 10 assists. Senior Emily Lewis finished the night in double-figure kills with 11, and Cori Aafedt led the Pokes in assists with 13. As a team, Wyoming posted a .441 hitting percentage, while holding the Bears to .200.

In the first set, the Pokes got the best of a back-and-forth frame, pulling away for the 25-22 victory. The Cowgirls hit their best percentage of the night with a .484 mark. In the following set, the Cowgirls took control midway through, taking the 25-20 win to put the Bears’ backs against the wall.

Wyoming jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third, but the Bears would eventually tie it back up at 14-all. When the teams were tied again at 17-all, the Cowgirls responded by winning eight of the final 10 points to close out the frame, 25-19, and ultimately the match.

The Cowgirls will host an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. inside the Arena-Auditorium. Admission is free.
