Cowgirls Sitting Atop MWC Standings
The Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team took hold of first-place in the Mountian West Conference with 69-56 victory against UNLV at the Auditorium Arena on Saturday. Now comes the challenging – maintain that top spot in the six games of the MWC season.
“Look at the last three weeks, they’re very difficult,” said coach Joe Legerski. “It’s going to be a big challenge all the way through. And I know we talk about just — we don’t even talk about one game at a time. We talk about 5 minutes at a time. We even break it down further.”
So it’s not the win at UNLV that is the focus for the Cowgirls. That’s history. They are focused on Wednesday night’s game at the Auditorium-Arena against San Diego State.
“You don’t get extra points,” said Legerski. “We got a big win (Saturday), but we’re going to have to come back and play well again on Wednesday.”
Three seniors came up big against UNLV, led by the late-season revival of Marleah Campbell and Natalie Baker and continued impressive play of Liv Roberts.
Campbell went into last Wednesday’s game having not appeared in six of the seven previous games, but responded to a 15-minute opportunity with 10 points against Utah State, and came back on Saturday against UNLV to score 11 points in 17 minutes.
Baker scored came off 21 points against Utah State to add 21 points and a team-high six rebounds to score 11 points against UNLV.
And Robert led the team with 21 points.
