3 Cowgirls Headed to U20 European Hoops Championships

LARAMIE – Current Cowgirl basketball player Selale Kepenc will represent her home country of Turkey while incoming freshmen Karla Erjavec and Tereza Vitulova have been selected to represent their home countries of Croatia and Czech Republic in the upcoming FIBA U20 Women’s European Championships.

The event will run from July 7-15 at Antonio Alexe Arena in Oradea, Romania and Novomatic Arena II in Sopron, Hungary.

There are four groups in Division B with five teams in each in group. In Group B with Turkey and the Czech Republic are with Belarus, Bulgaria and Denmark. Turkey’s first competition will be on Saturday against Denmark, followed by contest against the Czech Republic Sunday, Belarus Monday, Iceland on Wednesday, and Bulgaria, July 12. Vitulova’s first game will be on Saturday, against Belarus. The team will face Turkey on Sunday, Iceland on Monday, Bulgaria Wednesday and Denmark July 12.

In Division A, there are two groups of six teams each. Croatia is in Group C with Hungary, Latvia and Poland. The team’s first competition will be on July Saturday against Croatia, followed by Poland on Sunday, and Latvia on Monday.

All teams will then advance to the playoff round of 16. Groups A and B, and C and D will play crossover games with the top eight moving on to the quarterfinals.

A junior from Istanbul, Turkey, Kepenc played in 25 games off the bench during her sophomore campaign. She averaged 3.5 points and 1.3 rebounds. She had a breakout game with a career-high 15 points in a key win for the Cowgirls against New Mexico.

Erjavec, from Zagreb, Croatia, has been a member of both the U18 and U20 National Team. This past season, she helped the U19 team to a championship and was the top scorer, while being a member of the national school basketball championship.

Vitulova, from Domasov, Czech Republic, has been a member of the U18 and U20 National Team. Last summer, she averaged 10.4 points, 4.9 rebounds while helping the team to a fourth place finish at the U18 FIBA Women’s European Championships.
