Bettis Has a Happy Anniversary; Rockies Celebrate with Win

Don't pay any attention to the boxscore from the Rockies 5-3, 12-inning victory against the Giants at AT&T Park on Thursday night.

It was a victory for Chad Bettis, not a no-decision.

On the 366th day after he underwent his final chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer, Bettis took the mound at AT&T Park and turned in six quality innings, marred only by a two-run, game-tying home run hit by Brandon Belt with two out in the sixth.

It was seemingly fitting, however, that the Rockies didn't fold. With a bullpen that turned in six shutout innings, and Carlos Gonzalez delivering a two-run single in the top of the 12th inning the Rockies had a win that made the celebration of Bettis' survival even better.

"Unbelievable," Bettis said of his situation. "All the guys in the clubhouse who have been with me the whole year, every step of the way, from being diagnosed twice (with cancer) to being on the other side of it now means a lot to me."

Knowing it was his turn to pitch on Thursday, Bettis said it was a low key celebration of the first anniversary of being declared cancer free on Wednesday night.

"My wife flew into town and we had a nice dinner," said Bettis. "I took a step back, and enjoyed time with my wife. It meant a lot to us, being able to enjoy each other's company."

The feel-good story's opening chapter came in the final weeks of 2017 when Bettis returned to the active roster and went 2-4 with a 5.05 ERA in nine starts. It was a chance to get back on the mound and into a routine.

This year, he has taken it to the next level. He has become a key part of the Rockies pitching staff, that has been the key to the team being just 1 1/2 games back of the first-place Diamondbacks in the NL West.

After taking it slowly in his first two starts, Bettis has five quality starts in the last six games.

While his stats are a bit jaded by the seven runs he allowed in five innings of a no-decision in an 11-10 Rockies 10-inning loss to the Brewers last Friday, Bettis has allowed three or fewer runs in seven of his nine starts. His 3.27 ERA is the lowest among the members of the Rockies rotation, and he has the second lowest batting average allowed among the starters.

How big of a night was it for Bettis? Well, he even had the RBI-single that capped off the Rockies three-run second inning. Big deal? Well, it is for Bettis. As solid as he has been on the mound, his hitting has been a challenge.

Bettis is a career .065 hitter, but he already has a "career-high" three hits this year, and that RBI on Thursday was his first of the year and fifth of his career.

After the solid six innings by Bettis, the Rockies bullpen stepped up and turned six shutout innings, holding the Giants down until the offense came up with the two runs in the 12th inning on Gonzalez's bases-loaded single. The six shutout innings equaled the sixth longest shutout effort by Rockies relievers in franchise history, and was the 17th time overall in which Rockies relievers combined to work six or more innings in a game without allowing a run.

It was Gonzalez who provided the game-winning hit, a two-out single in the 12th after the Giants walked the bases loaded. It was Gonzalez's second-game winning RBI of the season, and marked only the fourth time this year he has had two RBI in a game -- the 11th game in which he has driven in a run,

Gonzalez's focus was on the win, not his at-bat.

"It was a great team effort from everyone, especially the bullpen," said Gonzalez. "This team is about winning. Not getting numbers. At the end of the season it doesn't matter if you hit .500 and the team doesn't win games. It's about the team winning."
