Worth Noting: Rockies Part Ways With Assistant GM Jon Weil

Jon Weil, who joined the Rockies front office staff in 2006 and most recently served as assistant general manager/player personnel, became the first casualty of the post-Jeff Bridich era when he was let go this week. Weil is in his 26th year in professional baseball,

Weil will be paid the remaining portion of his contract.

The Florida native has been involved in scouting since joining the Rockies, beginning his tenure as manager of Minor League Operation. He was moved to working in professional scouting in 2008, serving as manager of professional scouting initially.

He was promoted the role of director of professional scouting from 2010-14. He moved into the role of assistant general manager/player personnel in November of 2014, where his responsibilities included assisting former general manager Bridich in player acquisitions as well as overseeing scouting efforts at both the big-league and minor league levels.

A bat boy for the Florida Marlins in 1996 and 1997, he became an intern for the Marlins in 1998, focusing on player relations and scouting.

After completing MLB’s Scout Development Program, Weil spent five years with the Kansas City Royals as an area scout with coverage in George, Tennessee and Kentucky.

AFTER THROWING a bullpen session on Thursday, Jon Gray is expected to report to the Rockies Triple-A Albuquerque affiliate for a rehab assignment, expected to be for one game after which he will be activated to the Rockies’ roster.

Gray was placed on the Injured List June 6.

MEANWHILE, Mychal Givens was placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday because of a lower left back strain. Givens has a 2.78 ERA in 24 appearances, covering 22 2/3 innings.

Black said the lower back has {been a nagging problem. He was able to work an inning a couple days ago but it is at the point” where Givens’ availability is a day-to-day matter.

Taking Givens’ spot on the big-league roster is right-handed reliever Justin Lawrence. Givens will be making a return to the Rockies. He appeared in seven games, striking out six and giving up six whiles while walking four 5 1/3 innings before be optioned to Albuquerque on May 10.
