Former Mr. Football in Pennsylvania, Datres, Among Rockies Latest Signees
The Rockies have agreed to terms with two additional selections from the June draft, including Kyle Datres, a third baseman at the University of North Carolina, who was Mr. Football in Pennsylvania his senior year in high school and was offered a scholarship to play quarterback at Penn State.
The Rockies also have signed right-handed pitcher Mitchell Killkenny from Texas A&M, whose debut will be delayed a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Monday.
Killkenny was a second-round compensation pick, the 76th player taken overall, and was signed to a $550,000 bonus. His slot money was $787,200. The Rockies could have offered him $314,880, 40 percent of the slot money, and would have received a compensation pick next June.
The fact they gave him 70 percent of value despite the fact Killkenny needed the surgery underscores their interest in making sure he joined the organization, which will oversee his rehabilitation,.
Datres was a 12th round selection, the 366th player taken overall. Datres will join the Rockies Short-season A affiliate at Boise.
With Datres and Kilkenny agreed to terms, the Rockies have signed 32 of their top 33 selections. The only unsigned player is second baseman Hunter Stovall of Mississippi State, which was just eliminated from the College World Series. Stovall was the Rockies 21st-round selection.
The Rockies could still sign one of their last eight selections from the draft, seven of whom are high school players. Catcher Bret Auerbach, the 40th round and final selection, is a catcher at Saddleback Community College.
