Sunday Farm Report: 2020 No. 1 Draft Veen Puts On A Show in Fresno's Victory

Zac Veen, the high school outfielder from Florida who went seventh overall in last June’s draft to the Rockies, showed his complete set of talents in Low-A Fresno’s 9-3 victory over Diamondbacks affiliate Visalia on Sunday.

Fresno is 9-3, tied for first place in the Northern Division, and riding a six-game winning streak.

In addition to the big game by Veen, Daniel Montano had two hits and an RBI. Mike Ruff (3-0, 2.40) started and earned the win, working five innings in which he allowed five hits and struck out nine.

In other games Sunday:

Triple A Albuquerque (1-9) lost 6-1 at Arizona affiliate El Paso in the Pacific Coast League. Ian Clarkin (0-2, 14.09) allowed three runs in five innings and suffered the loss. Wynton Bernard doubled in the fourth, took third on a Ryan Vilade single, and stole home. Danny Edgeworth made his AAA debut after being promoted from Low-A Fresno, and went 1-3.

Double A Hartford (5-7) extended its winning streaks to three games with a 5-3 victory against Boston affiliate Portland. The Yard Goats won the series, four games to two. Taylor Snyder and Greg Jones hit consecutive homers in the fourth inning. Reagan Todd, Julian Fernandez and Yoan Aybar retired all ten batters faced in middle relief. Tommy Doyle surrendered a home run in the ninth but earned his first save in Double-A. Garrett Schilling started and worked into the fifth inning allowing a pair of runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

High A Spokane (2-10) lost 7-6 in 11 innings vs. Toronto affiliate Vancouver in a game played at Hillsboro, Ore., because of Canadian COVID restrictions. The Indians had scored twice in the top of the ninth to take a 6-5 lead, but Vancouver responded with a game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth off closer Trent Fennell, and another run in the 11th off Trysten Barlow, who struck out three of the five batters he faced. Chris McMahon, the Rockies second-round draft choice out of the University of Miami last summer, started and allowed five runs on 10 hits in six innings.
