Hall of Fame Chatter: Past World Series of Astros and Phillies On Display in Cooperstown

CHAMPIONS T O B E HONORED

The 2022 World Series champions will be celebrated in Cooperstown in Autumn Glory, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s exhibit that chronicles the postseason. The 2022 edition of Autumn Glory will be unveiled in the coming weeks on the Museum’s third floor and feature artifacts from the 2022 postseason.

The exhibit will run through the 2023 Major League Baseball postseason.

The Museum collections contain many artifacts documenting the entire history of World Series and postseason play, including:

— Don Larsen’s cap and Yogi Berra’s mitt from Larsen’s 1956 perfect game;

— Joe Carter’s bat from his 1993 Series-ending blast.

— World Series rings from the last century of Fall Classic competition.

ASTRO-NOMICAL

The Astros are making their fifth appearance in the World Series following their Fall Classic debut in 2005 when they played in the National League and their 2017, 2019 and 2021 appearances as a member of the American League.

The Astros fell to the White Sox in the 2005 World Series, defeated the Dodgers in 2017, were defeated by the Nationals in 2019 and fell to the Braves in 2021.

The Museum collections contain several artifacts from the 2005 Astros, including:

— A jersey worn by Jeff Bagwell in Game 4 of the World Series, the last game of Bagwell’s Hall of Fame career.

— Spikes worn by Hall of Famer Craig Biggio during the 2005 World Series.

— Dirt from the home plate area of Minute Maid Park from the first World Series to be played in the state of Texas.

— And the jersey worn by Chris Burke in Game 5 of the 2005 NLDS when Burke’s walk-off home run in the 18th inning gave Houston the series win.

Artifacts in Cooperstown from the 2017 Astros world title include:

— A glove used by Alex Bregman throughout the World Series.

— The jersey worn by Justin Verlander in Game 6.

— The cap worn by Game 7 winning pitcher Charlie Morton.

Artifacts from Houston’s 2019 World Series appearance in Cooperstown include:

— A glove worn by Michael Brantley during the 2019 regular season and Postseason.

— A batting helmet worn by ALCS MVP Jose Altuve during the 2019 Postseason.

Artifacts from the 2021 Astros include:

— A cap worn by manager Dusty Baker during the season.

— A batting helmet worn by ALCS MVP Yordan Álvarez during the Postseason.

PHILLED WITH JOY

— The Phillies are making their eighth appearance in the World Series.

— The Phillies fell to the Red Sox in 1915, were defeated by the Yankees in 1950, won their first championship against the Royals in 1980, fell to the Orioles in 1983, lost to the Blue Jays in 1993, defeated the Rays in 2008 and lost to the Yankees in 2009.

— The Museum preserves several artifacts from Phillies World Series appearances, including:

— 1950: A jersey worn by Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn during the World Series.

—2008: The jersey worn by World Series MVP Cole Hamels in Game 5 of that year’s Fall Classic, along with a bat used by Ryan Howard in Game 4, spikes worn by Jayson Werth throughout the World Series, a cap worn by Eric Bruntlett during home games throughout the Series, a helmet worn by Carlos Ruiz and a bat used by pitcher Joe Blanton to hit his Game 4 home run.

— 2009: A cap worn by Cliff Lee throughout the postseason and a bat used by Phillies second baseman Chase Utley during the World Series, when he tied a record with five World Series home runs.
