Thursday by Comparison: Immaculate Marquez becomes a 10-10 pitcher

German Marquez joined reliever Rex Brothers as the only Rockies pitchers to have an immaculate inning -- facing three batters, striking each out and using nine pitches. It was the 92nd time it has been accomplished in MLB history.

And in the top of the fourth, against the top of the Pirates lineup, it was a curveball that was the final pitch of the three pitches he threw to Corey Dickerson, Starling Marte and Gregor Polanco.

Yes, a curveball. End of discussion.

Brothers threw his immaculate inning back in 2014 at San Francisco. And three opposing pitches have been immaculate for an inning against the Rockies -- all on the road -- Mike Magnante with the Astros, Orel Hershiser with the Giants, and Wade Miley with the Diamondbacks.

That's not all.

Marquez also managed to reach double figures in both hits allowed and batters struck out. It was the 65th time that has happened in a big-league game since the inception of the Rockies in 1993 -- the fifth time by a Rockies pitcher. And an opponent has had 10 or more strikeouts and given up 10 or more hits against the Rockies three times. Pedro Astacio not only accounted for two of th five Rockies 10-10 games, but he struck out 11 both times.

Even with losses in seven of their last 10 games, the Rockies have the third best record in franchise history after 114 games. It is only the seventh time in the Rockies 26 seasons that they have had a winning record this late in the season. The Rockies have advanced to the post-season in four of the previous six, including both the seasons that rank ahead of the Rockies in 2018.
