Farm Report: Fresno, San Jose Close Out Regular Season With Playoff No. 1 Seed at Stake

The Rockies Low-A affiliate Fresno and the Giants affiliate San Jose close out the regular season against each other on Sunday. They, however, are going to see a lot of each other in the next week or so.

They are set to open the Low-A West playoffs on Tuesday. The winner of Sunday’s regular-season finale will have the No. 1 Seed in the Low-A West playoffs. Fresno goes into Sunday with a 73-41 record — having five of its games last week cancelled because the opponent, Modesto, was dealing with COVID issues.

Fresno suffered a 5-2 loss to San Jose on Saturday. Blair Calvo (4-2, 4.54) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hit, striking out one, in three inning. Zac Veen (.302) was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

While the AA, and A leagues complete regular-season play on Sunday, the AAA leagues will continue to play for 10 additional days, their seasons ending Oct. 3, the same as the big-league teams. The AAA teams will provide roster protection for big-league teams.

In other games involving Rockies affiliates Saturday:

AAA Albuquerque (51-66) lost 7-2 to Astros affiliate Sugar Land (69-48). Frank Duncan (5-3, 4.19) allowed two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out three in 4 2/3 innings. Josh Fuentes (.248) was 1-for-4 and scored a run. Elehuris Montero (.271) was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

AA Hartford (38-79) lost 12-5 to Red Sox affiliate Portland (67-46). David Hill (2-5, 5.25) allowed five runs on 11 hits, striking out three, in five innings. Coco Montes (.255) had his league-leading 36th double. Casey Golden (.236) and Sean Bouchard (.266) had two hits apiece.

High-A Spokane (67-49) was rained out Saturday at Mariners affiliate Everett (68-50). The two teams close out the regular season Sunday, the winner of that game having the No. 1 seed in a matchup of the two teams in the post-season playoffs that begin Tuesday.

ACL Rockies (43-16) defeated the ACL Diamondbacks (21-39) 10-1. The Rockies took control of the game with an eight-run fifth inning. Aiverson Rodriquez (.228) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, double and three RBI. Braiden Ward (.308) was 1-for-3, scoring two runs and driving in two. Jarrod Cande (2-0, 2.45) retired four of five batters he faced, striking out two, to earn the win.
