Rockies Retain Manager Bud Black, Make Two Adjustments to Coaching Staff

DENVER – Manager Bud Black, who guided the Rockies to the post-season in 2017 and 2018, will return for a seventh season at the helm of the franchise in 2023, along with six members of his 2022 coaching staff, the team announced Thursday.

The Rockies also announced Bullpen Coach Reid Cornelius, First Base Coach Ron Gideon, Assistant Hitting Coach Andy González, Assistant Hitting Coach P.J. Pilittere, Bench Coach Mike Redmond and Pitching Coach Darryl Scott will all return for the 2023 season.

Stu Cole, who has been with the Rockies organization since its inception as a player, minor league instructor/coach and big-league coach, will return to a minor league position in the 2023 season.

It also was announced that the organization and Dave Magadan, the big league hitting coach the last four seasons, mutually agreed to part ways.

The Rockies earned back-to-back post-season appearances in Black’s first two years, but have not finished with a winning record the last four seasons.

A former big-league pitcher, whose career began with Seattle (1981) and included time with Kansas City (1982-88), Cleveland (1988-90, 1995), Toronto (1990), and San Francisco (1991-95), Black managed the San Diego Padres from 2007 through the first 65 games of 2015.
